** POACHING INCIDENT April 6 2025 **

*POACHING INCIDENT*
This afternoon our bailiff Mr Griffiths encountered a group of poachers on our waters.
The details available are limited but we are aware he was assaulted and his mobile phone was damaged.
The matter is now in the hands of Derbyshire Police.
Luckily on this occasion it appears the actual assault resulted in minimal injuries but nevertheless this is a shocking and frightening incident of what can occur when encountering such individuals.
Members of Cromford Fly Fishers safety is the top priority.
To remind members here are the full details  of what you should do:
1. DO NOT approach the Poachers
2. DO NOT engage in conversation with the Poachers
3. DO NOT challenge the Poachers
4. DO NOT contact the Police directly (much quicker via Keith Griffiths)
The reasons for this are for your personal safety plus the longer they are left undisturbed the more time there is for the Bailiff/Police to catch them red-handed.
YOU MUST IMMEDIATELY CONTACT OUR BAILIFF KEITH GRIFFITHS WHO HAS A DIRECT LINE TO THE WILDLIFE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND HE WILL DEAL WITH THE INCIDENT – KEITH LIVES ONLY 10 MINUTES FROM THE RIVER
KEITH’S MOBILE IS 07950 156060
ALL MEMBERS SHOULD HAVE THIS IN THEIR PHONE!!!
When reporting poachers to Keith please try to give him the following information:
1. Where are they poaching? (What3Words is a good app to have on your phone)
2. What time did you see them?
3. How many of them? Descriptions if possible.
4. Did you witness them actually fishing and catching fish – or did you just see them walking near the river with intent?
5. If you saw them getting in/out of a car the make, model and registration would be really good.

To confirm this is from the locked gate upstream of the bridge to the foot bridge, inclusive of both banks.

We will let you know when the work has been completed

Derbyshire Wildlife Trust appeal to save the River Derwent

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/czj9e3zgl7do
A wildlife trust has launched an urgent appeal to "save the River Derwent" in Derbyshire.

Derbyshire Wildlife Trust's (DWT) Derwent Survival Plan aims to raise £195,000 before winter to restore the river and "create thriving habitats for native species on the brink of extinction".

It said the money would fund projects like planting riverside trees to stabilise riverbanks and provide shade, adding reedbeds to slow water flow, and removing pollutants.

Jennifer Kril, living rivers officer at DWT, said creatures that live in the river, including white-clawed crayfish, lamprey, otters, water voles, and Atlantic salmon, were under threat.

DWT said the "iconic" river was polluted

The organisation said the health of the river was in "rapid decline".

Threats to the waterway included pollution, increased fluctuations in water levels, and large-scale felling of riverside trees, said DWT.

It added the funding would help them to focus on the most urgent projects for nature’s recovery.
'Must act now'

DWT also plans to use the money to undertake projects like creating habitats for birds - for example, bitterns - and bypassing weirs to allow passage for species like Atlantic salmon.

Ms Kril said: “The Derwent catchment is an incredibly important ecosystem in Derbyshire, but human actions have degraded and polluted this iconic river, destroying habitats and threatening species.

"We must act now before it is too late.

"White-clawed crayfish are at risk of extinction, lamprey are red listed, otters are red listed, water voles are endangered, and Atlantic salmon are under threat."

River Closure

SEVERN TRENT BRIDGE WORKS
We have been advised that work to replace the vehicle bridge from the Lea car park to the treatment works will commence in the near future.
Access along the left bank (looking upstream) will not be possible for most of the summer.
Contingencies will be taken by the contractors to mitigate any river impact.
Access will still be possible through Spencers on the right bank.

WATER QUALITY MONITORING NETWORK REPORT

Under the guidance of Tim Ireland our club was one of the first to sign up to the new WQMN testing regime set up by The Angling Trust. Their first ever annual report has now been published. Whilst our stretch of the Derwent is extremely healthy that is not the case in much of the country and the report is well worth reading......
