Lea Bridge works postponed

Effective from  June 5 2025

Severn Trent have postponed the bridge work around Lea Bridge, therefore all areas of the river are now fully open to anglers.

Canoists on club water May 2025

Sorry if this sounds like we’re teaching people to suck eggs but this may save a member getting in trouble.
As we approach the peak period of members wanting to fish our water it is possible members may see an increase in canoeist activity during the same period.
Unfortunately the canoeists activity can disrupt an anglers fishing as we all know and it is at this precise moment when it is vital for members to remain calm and not become ‘over excited’ in a moment of frustration.
Many of these people video their canoeing trips and this could easily be used as ‘evidence’ to show ‘aggressive anglers.’ At worst this could even be presented to the police as a complaint of threatening behaviour.
I know this will be extremely frustrating but it’s vital for members to remain calm and professional & tell canoeists they are trespassing and disrupting a lawful activity (your fishing.) If you are wading in the river you could also state that they are threatening your personal safety.
If possible a video recording of any such interaction will be useful to negate any allegations and to gather evidence re illegal canoeing activity.
Members will need to keep the original pictures or recordings on their phone or camera. Once copied elsewhere important info - date+timestamp and location could be deleted.
Ian Evetts will be happy to help members get the info off their devices if required - please contact Ian directly for this please. 07801 702266.
No photos or videos to be taken of young people clearly under 18.
The committee are looking at a range of options to address this issue.

Update on Severn Trent bridge works

Severn Trent have advised the bridge works at Lea Bridge have been temporarily suspended.
They will recommence on 28th April.
The river in this area is currently open for fishing.
It will close again from 28th April.

** POACHING INCIDENT April 6 2025 **

*POACHING INCIDENT*
This afternoon our bailiff Mr Griffiths encountered a group of poachers on our waters.
The details available are limited but we are aware he was assaulted and his mobile phone was damaged.
The matter is now in the hands of Derbyshire Police.
Luckily on this occasion it appears the actual assault resulted in minimal injuries but nevertheless this is a shocking and frightening incident of what can occur when encountering such individuals.
Members of Cromford Fly Fishers safety is the top priority.
To remind members here are the full details  of what you should do:
1. DO NOT approach the Poachers
2. DO NOT engage in conversation with the Poachers
3. DO NOT challenge the Poachers
4. DO NOT contact the Police directly (much quicker via Keith Griffiths)
The reasons for this are for your personal safety plus the longer they are left undisturbed the more time there is for the Bailiff/Police to catch them red-handed.
YOU MUST IMMEDIATELY CONTACT OUR BAILIFF KEITH GRIFFITHS WHO HAS A DIRECT LINE TO THE WILDLIFE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND HE WILL DEAL WITH THE INCIDENT – KEITH LIVES ONLY 10 MINUTES FROM THE RIVER
KEITH’S MOBILE IS 07950 156060
ALL MEMBERS SHOULD HAVE THIS IN THEIR PHONE!!!
When reporting poachers to Keith please try to give him the following information:
1. Where are they poaching? (What3Words is a good app to have on your phone)
2. What time did you see them?
3. How many of them? Descriptions if possible.
4. Did you witness them actually fishing and catching fish – or did you just see them walking near the river with intent?
5. If you saw them getting in/out of a car the make, model and registration would be really good.
